I arrive back at the office, and the phone doesn’t stop for the rest of the day. As I wade through all the emails, my thoughts trail to something that Denice said, that I should look into forensics. And suddenly I find myself looking up the program offered in Dallas, for just that. If I applied, the department would pay for the schooling, since it’s relevant to my job. Especially if I turned in a letter of intent for the job posting that somehow just magically popped up on the electronic job board.

I’d be able to start while taking the courses, which is a plus. Thankfully, with my tenure, job security is never a problem, especially since I’ve moved around in so many damn departments and proven my worth time and time again, so fear is the least of my worries. It’s more trepidation over starting something new again. That’s never bothered me before, but I suppose I don’t feel like I’m twenty anymore. When I was younger, I was all but a vagabond, career-wise, so long as I stayed within the area of interest, and I always have. Never have I thought about leaving this and moving on to something like business or anything else.

What’s even stranger is that I feel like I want to run this by Denice first. Not for permission, of course, but for her input. Despite the fact that I already know what her thoughts are, that was just when I was thinking about it, not now, in the last few hours, since I’ve been seriously considering it. And suddenly I can’t wait to get home to her, to talk it over. Normally, I’d just bounce it off Kate, as she’s always been my biggest fan. But now I feel like it’s not just Kate. And I’m excited about that. Is that crazy?

As I drive home, I find myself smiling, thinking about Denice. About how happy she makes me in the short time that I’ve known her. She’s sweet, beautiful, brave, sensible, honest, and kind. Plus, she’s right up there with intelligence and hard work, something that I can totally get on board with. And the more I think about it, the more I realize how right my sister is, after all. I just hope that Denice is on the same page as me. And what if she isn’t?
